Steel calculator

A quick estimate of TMT steel for a house from its built-up area, with a split by bar size.

How it works

Steel (kg) = built-up area (sq ft) × 3.5 to 4.5 kg per sq ft, the usual thumb rule for residential RCC frame buildings. The split assumes 8 mm 25%, 10 mm 25%, 12 mm 25%, 16 mm 15%, 20 mm 10%. Bar counts use D² ÷ 162 kg per metre and 12 m bars.

Estimated steel: 4,000 kg (4.00 tonnes)

Estimate only. Actual steel depends on design, soil, spans and floors. Always order from your structural drawing and bar bending schedule (BBS).

FAQ

How much steel is needed per sq ft for a house?
A common thumb rule for residential RCC frame buildings is 3.5 to 4.5 kg of steel per sq ft of built-up area. Taller buildings and longer spans need more.
How many 12 m bars are in a tonne?
Divide 1000 by the weight of one 12 m bar (D² ÷ 162 × 12). For 12 mm bars that is about 93 bars per tonne.
Can I order steel from this estimate?
Use it for budgeting only. Order quantities should come from your structural drawing and bar bending schedule (BBS).

Send us your bar bending schedule and we will quote the full steel order.
