AAC block calculator

Work out AAC blocks and jointing material for a wall from its area and block thickness.

Formula and assumptions

AAC blocks are 600 x 200 mm on the face, so one m² of wall needs 8.33 blocks whatever the thickness. Each block has one bed joint and one head joint. Thin-bed adhesive uses a 3 mm joint at about 1600 kg per m³ dry, and cement mortar uses a 10 mm joint with dry volume × 1.33 split by the mix ratio. A 50 kg cement bag is 0.0347 m³.

Block size
Jointing
  • Wall volume: 3.00 m³
  • AAC blocks: 263
  • Adhesive: 101 kg (5 bags of 25 kg)

Estimate only. Wastage is added to blocks and jointing material (5% by default). Deduct door and window openings, and follow the block maker's adhesive coverage if it differs.

FAQ

How many AAC blocks are needed per square metre?
8.33 blocks per m² for any thickness, since the face is 600 x 200 mm. Thickness changes wall volume and jointing material, not the count.
Which AAC block thickness should I use?
100 mm and 150 mm are common for partition walls, and 200 mm or 230 mm for external walls. Your engineer should confirm the choice.
Thin-bed adhesive or cement mortar?
Thin-bed adhesive makes a 3 mm joint, uses far less material and is the usual choice for AAC. Cement mortar needs a thicker 10 mm joint.
