MS pipe weight chart
Weight per metre of MS round pipes and square and rectangular hollow sections, calculated from size and wall thickness.
Formulas
Round pipe: weight (kg per metre) = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466. For a 60.3 mm pipe of 3.6 mm wall: 5.034 kg per metre.
Square or rectangular section: weight (kg per metre) = 2 × t × (a + b − 2t) × 0.00785. For 40 × 40 × 2 mm: 2.386 kg per metre. All sizes in millimetres.

Calculated nominal weights. The hollow section formula ignores corner radii, so it reads slightly above catalogue values, and thicknesses shown are typical rather than every size made. Billing is by actual weighed weight.

FAQ
- What is the weight formula for an MS round pipe?
- Weight (kg per metre) = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466, with outside diameter OD and wall thickness t in millimetres.
- What is the weight formula for a square or rectangular hollow section?
- Weight (kg per metre) = 2 × t × (a + b − 2t) × 0.00785, with sides a and b and thickness t in millimetres. For a square section this is 4 × t × (a − t) × 0.00785.
- What are light, medium and heavy pipes?
- IS 1239 classes the same nominal bore in three wall thicknesses. Heavy is thickest and strongest, light is thinnest. Pick by pressure and use.
- How do I find the weight of a full pipe length?
- Multiply kg per metre by the length. A 6 m pipe weighs six times the per metre value.
- Why does my billed weight differ from the chart?
- Charts give calculated nominal weights. Actual pipe varies within standard tolerances, so billing is by weighed weight.
