Brick calculator
Work out bricks, cement and sand for a wall before you order.
Formula and assumptions
A standard Indian brick is 190 x 90 x 90 mm, or 200 x 100 x 100 mm with a 10 mm mortar joint. That gives 50 bricks per m² for a 4.5 inch wall and 100 per m² for a 9 inch wall. Wet mortar is the wall volume minus the volume of the bricks, dry volume is wet × 1.33, and each material takes its share of the mix ratio. A 50 kg cement bag is 0.0347 m³.
Wall thickness
Mortar ratio (cement:sand)
- Wall area: 30.0 m²
- Bricks: 1575
- Cement: 4.0 bags (50 kg)
- Sand: 0.83 m³ (29.2 cu ft)
Estimate only. Wastage is added to bricks, cement and sand (5% by default). Deduct door and window openings from the wall area, and confirm quantities with your engineer or mason.

FAQ
- How many bricks are needed per square metre?
- About 50 bricks for a 4.5 inch wall and 100 for a 9 inch wall, using standard 190 x 90 x 90 mm bricks with 10 mm joints.
- How much cement and sand does brickwork need?
- A 9 inch wall uses about 0.046 m³ of wet mortar per m². At 1:6 that works out to roughly 0.25 bags of cement per m² before wastage. Use the calculator for your wall size.
- Should I deduct doors and windows?
- Yes. Enter the net wall area by reducing the length or height, or run the calculator once for the full wall and subtract the opening area share.
