PPC vs OPC cement: which one to buy for your house

Walk into any cement shop and you will be asked: PPC or OPC? Both are good cements. They behave differently, and the right pick depends on where you are using it.

What the names mean

OPC is Ordinary Portland Cement, made to IS 269. It comes in 43 and 53 grades. The number is the minimum compressive strength in N/mm² of a standard mortar cube at 28 days. So OPC 53 must reach at least 53 N/mm², and OPC 43 at least 43 N/mm².

PPC is Portland Pozzolana Cement, made to IS 1489 (Part 1). It is OPC clinker ground together with fly ash, a fine powder from power plants. The fly ash reacts slowly with the lime released as cement hardens and forms extra binding gel. PPC must reach at least 33 N/mm² at 28 days.

PPC is not a weaker cement in the long run. It starts slower and catches up. That is why most houses in India are built with it today.

Where PPC is the better choice

  • Plastering and brick or block masonry: smoother, more cohesive mortar and fewer shrinkage cracks.
  • Slabs, beams and columns of normal houses: IS 456 allows PPC for general RCC work, and its lower heat means fewer hairline cracks.
  • Foundations and basements in damp or salty soil: better resistance to sulphate attack.
  • Mass concrete such as thick footings and raft foundations: lower heat of hydration.

Where OPC is the better choice

  • When you need strength fast: precast work, prestressed members, or work where shuttering must be removed early.
  • High grade concrete (M30 and above) for heavy columns, as designed by the engineer.
  • Cold weather concreting, where PPC gains strength more slowly.
  • Any job where the drawing specifically asks for OPC.

Curing matters more than the cement name

Poor curing ruins any cement. Keep slabs and columns wet for at least 7 days with OPC, and for 10 days or more with PPC, since PPC gains strength more slowly and loses moisture the same way. In a hot UP summer, start curing as soon as the surface can take it without washing out, and cover slabs with wet gunny or ponded water.

How to check a bag before you buy

  • Look for the BIS ISI mark, the grade or type printed clearly, and the batch or packing date. Cement loses strength with age, so use bags within about 3 months of packing.
  • Standard bag weight is 50 kg. A bag that is soft and lumpy or that crumbles into hard lumps has taken up moisture. Reject it.
  • Store bags on a raised dry platform, away from walls, stacked no more than 10 high.
  • Buy from an authorised dealer who can show the invoice and batch number.

Frequently asked questions

Is PPC or OPC better for slab casting?
Both work. For normal house slabs PPC is widely used and gives fewer shrinkage cracks if cured properly. Use OPC 53 only if the engineer has asked for fast strength gain.
Can I mix PPC and OPC in the same slab?
It is best not to. They set and gain strength at different rates, which can show up as uneven curing and cracks. Use one type for one pour.
Is PPC weaker than OPC?
At 28 days the minimum is lower (33 vs 43 or 53 N/mm²), but PPC keeps gaining strength afterwards and is more durable in damp and salty conditions. Real strength depends on the mix design and curing.
How old can a cement bag be and still be used?
Use it within about 3 months of the packing date. Beyond that cement slowly absorbs moisture and loses strength. Never use bags with hard lumps.
