Parts of a shed
- Columns: MS pipe, hollow section or I-section, set in concrete footings.
- Roof frame: trusses or rafters, made from angles, pipes or hollow sections.
- Purlins: horizontal members, such as rectangular hollow sections or channels, that carry the sheets.
- Roofing sheets: GI, colour coated, GC, fibre cement or asbestos free sheets.
- Fasteners: J-hooks or screws with washers, ridge caps and flashing.
Work out the quantities
Measure the shed length and width, plus the roof slope. Roof sheet area is roughly length times the sloped width, with an overhang on each side. Divide by the effective cover width of your sheet profile to get the number of sheets, and add overlap and wastage.
Count columns from the span between them. Purlin length follows from roof length and the purlin spacing the sheet manufacturer recommends. Weights of angles, channels and pipes come from our weight charts, so you can total steel in kg.
Dairy shed points
- Use a roof height that lets hot air rise out. Tall sheds with a ridge vent stay cooler for cattle.
- Give a generous roof overhang to keep rain and direct sun off the animals.
- Choose a light coloured or insulated sheet to cut radiant heat.
- Keep the floor sloped to drains and use a rust resistant coat on steel in contact with urine and dung.
Poultry shed points
- Ventilation matters most. Plan side openings with mesh and a ridge opening along the roof.
- Use a wire mesh on the sides for air flow and bird safety.
- Keep the span narrow enough for cross ventilation, which is why many poultry sheds are long and narrow.
- Insulated or reflective roofing helps during UP summers.
Sheet choice at a glance
| Sheet type | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|
| GC or GI sheets | General farm roofs | Light and easy to fix, check coating thickness |
| Colour coated sheets | Dairy and poultry roofs | Lighter colours reflect heat |
| Fibre cement sheets | Sheds where lower heat gain is wanted | Heavier, needs a stronger frame |
Fabrication checks
- Prime and paint all steel after welding.
- Fix sheets with washers on the ridge side of the corrugation to avoid leaks.
- Brace the frame in both directions against wind.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate sheets for a tin shed?
- Divide the sloped roof area, including overhangs, by the effective cover of one sheet, then add overlap and wastage.
- Which sheet is best for a cattle shed?
- A light coloured or insulated sheet on a high roof helps keep the shed cool. Our roofing sheet guide compares sheet types.
- What steel is used for the frame?
- MS pipes or hollow sections for columns and trusses, with angles or channels as purlins, sized for your span.
- Do you give a quote?
- Yes. Share the length, width, height and sheet type on WhatsApp and we will quote at the day's rate.
