Same material, same basis
- Brand, grade and size must match. Fe500D from one mill is not the same as Fe500 from another.
- Unit of sale: per kg, per bar, per bundle, per bag, or per sheet. Convert everything to one unit, such as rupees per kg or per tonne.
- Count or weight: for steel, ask whether the rate applies to actual weight or to a standard bar count.
The extras that change the total
| Item | What to ask |
|---|---|
| GST | Is it included or extra? 18 percent is a big gap on a large order. |
| Delivery | Is it free, per trip, or per tonne? Which vehicle? |
| Loading and unloading | Who does it, and is it charged? |
| Weighing | Is the weighbridge slip provided? |
| Payment | Advance, on delivery, or credit? Is there a discount for cash? |
| Validity | How long does the rate stand? Steel and cement move daily. |
Why the cheapest quote can cost more
- No bill: you lose the paper trail for brand and grade, and cannot claim if the material is poor.
- Short weight: a low rate on steel that arrives light is not cheaper. Check weight on delivery.
- Substituted brand or grade after you pay.
- Old stock: for cement, ask for the packing date.
A simple comparison sheet
Write each quote on one line with rate per kg or bag, GST, delivery, loading, and total landed cost. The cheapest total on equal terms is your answer. If two totals are within 1 to 2 percent, pick the dealer who gives proper bills, stands behind the material and replies when you need them.
Frequently asked questions
- Should the quote include GST?
- Ask for it both ways, or insist on the final landed price. Compare only like with like.
- Is a cash discount worth it?
- Only if you still get a proper bill. A discount in exchange for no bill removes your protection.
- How often do steel and cement rates change?
- Often. Steel rates can move within a day. Always check the quote validity.
