MS flat, round, square bar and plate weight chart
Weights of MS flats, round bars, square bars and plates, calculated from size using steel density of 7850 kg/m³.
Formulas
- Flat bar: width × thickness × 0.00785 kg per metre (mm sizes).
- Round bar: d² / 162, same as d² × 0.00617 kg per metre (d in mm).
- Square bar: a² × 0.00785 kg per metre (a in mm).
- Plate or sheet: thickness (mm) × 7.85 kg per m².

Chequered plate
Chequered (checker) plate weight depends on the pattern and the ribs, so there is no single formula. As a rough guide, take the plain plate weight for the base thickness and add a small amount for the raised pattern. Ask for the supplier's weight chart or the mill sheet for exact figures.
Calculated nominal weights. Actual weight varies within rolling tolerance and billing is by weighed weight.

FAQ
- How do I calculate MS flat bar weight?
- Width (mm) × thickness (mm) × 0.00785 gives kg per metre. A 50 × 6 flat is 2.36 kg per metre.
- What is the formula for MS round bar weight?
- Weight (kg per metre) = d² / 162, or d² × 0.00617, with diameter d in mm. A 12 mm round bar is about 0.89 kg per metre.
- How much does an MS plate weigh per square metre?
- Each mm of thickness weighs 7.85 kg per m². A 10 mm plate is 78.5 kg per m². An 8 × 4 ft sheet (2.44 × 1.22 m) of 10 mm is about 234 kg.
- What is the weight of a square bar?
- Weight (kg per metre) = side² × 0.00785, with side in mm. A 16 mm square bar is 2.01 kg per metre.
- Why does billed weight differ from the chart?
- Charts use steel density of 7850 kg/m³. Actual bars and plates vary within rolling tolerance, so billing is by weighed weight.
