Which zone are these towns in?
India is divided into seismic zones II to V in IS 1893 (Part 1). Zone IV is high risk. The Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, using the BMTPC Vulnerability Atlas, lists Amroha, Bijnor, Hapur, Meerut and Moradabad among districts lying completely in zone IV. IS 1893 itself lists Moradabad as zone IV and Bareilly as zone III in its table of important towns.
Zone maps are revised from time to time and your exact plot can matter, so confirm the zone and design requirements with your structural engineer. This matches the note in our grade guide.
| District | Zone |
|---|---|
| Amroha | IV |
| Moradabad | IV |
| Meerut | IV |
| Bijnor | IV |
| Hapur | IV |
What a D grade bar does
In an earthquake, steel in columns and beams is stretched past its yield point again and again. A ductile bar stretches and absorbs energy instead of snapping. Under IS 1786, D grades like Fe500D must reach higher elongation and a higher tensile to yield ratio than plain Fe500, and carry tighter limits on sulphur and phosphorus.
That is why we recommend Fe500D or Fe550D for the frame of a house in this region. The full numbers are in our grade guide.
IS 13920 is a detailing code, not a bar rule
IS 13920 is the code for ductile detailing of reinforced concrete structures subjected to seismic forces. It is about how steel is arranged, not just which grade you buy. Typical items include closely spaced stirrups near beam column joints, 135 degree hooks on stirrups, lap splices kept away from high stress zones, and confinement of columns.
Our grade guide notes that IS 13920 asks for reinforcement with at least 14.5 percent elongation, and that plain Fe500 at 12 percent does not meet that. Treat that as one input. Buying Fe500D does not by itself make a building earthquake resistant.
Grade plus detailing plus workmanship
- Grade: use the D grade the drawing specifies.
- Detailing: follow stirrup spacing and hook details exactly. Do not stretch stirrup spacing to save steel.
- Laps: place laps where the drawing says. See our lap length guide.
- Concrete: use the specified mix and cure it properly.
- Walls and layout: regular, simple plans and well tied frames behave better than irregular ones.
Practical advice for a house
Get a structural drawing from a qualified engineer, ask for D grade steel, verify the mill test certificate and BIS mark, and weigh a sample at delivery. See our buying checklist. If you are unsure whether Fe550D is worth it, read our Fe550D guide first.
Call or WhatsApp the store with your bar list and we will quote current rates for Fe500D and other grades.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Amroha in seismic zone IV?
- Yes, the UP State Disaster Management Authority lists Amroha among districts completely in zone IV. Confirm for your plot with your engineer.
- Is Fe500D compulsory in zone IV?
- Do not treat IS 13920 as a bar grade rule. It is a detailing code. The engineer specifies the grade, and we recommend D grades for frames in zone IV.
- Does Fe500D make my house earthquake proof?
- No. It improves ductility, but good design, detailing and workmanship matter equally.
- Is Meerut in the same zone as Amroha?
- Yes, both are listed in zone IV by UP SDMA. Zone maps are revised over time, so check with your engineer.
