Before you order
Steps 1 to 3 happen at your desk, before any truck is booked.
- Step 1, get the bar list: take sizes, grade and quantity from the structural drawing or bar bending schedule. If you only have a thumb rule, use our steel calculator and the how much steel guide to plan, then confirm with your engineer.
- Step 2, fix the grade: use what the drawing says. For houses in west UP, which is seismic zone IV, a D grade such as Fe500D is the usual choice. Do not swap grades without the engineer. See our grade guide.
- Step 3, pick the brand: decide on a brand you can verify. Our branded vs local guide and best brand guide help you choose.
Place the order
- Step 4, get written quotes: same sizes, grade, brand and quantity, with GST and delivery stated. Our rate guide explains how to compare. Rates change, so call or WhatsApp the store for the current figure.
- Step 5, ask for documents: the BIS ISI mark and licence number on the tag, and the mill test certificate for the lot. Our MTC guide shows what to read in it.
At delivery
- Step 6, check marking and weight: look for the rolled brand and grade mark on the bars, count bundles, and weigh a sample. A 12 m bar of 12 mm should be close to 10.67 kg. Use the 1 metre method in our delivery guide, and our weight chart for other sizes. Do this before the truck leaves.
- Step 7, check the bill: it should show brand, grade, size wise quantity, rate, GST and total, matching what you ordered and what is on the truck. If you weighed on a weighbridge, keep the slip.
After delivery
- Step 8, store it properly: stack bars on timber or bricks, off the ground, on dry level ground, covered with a sheet but with air flow. Keep sizes separate and tagged. Light surface rust is common and usually fine, see our rust guide, but avoid long exposure to rain and soil.
The one page checklist
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Sizes and counts | Match the order, bundle by bundle |
| Grade mark | Rolled mark such as 500D on the bar |
| Brand mark | Same brand as the quote and the bill |
| BIS mark | ISI mark and licence number on tag |
| Mill test certificate | Lot or heat number matches the tag |
| Weight | Sample bar close to chart weight |
| Bill | Quantity, rate, GST all match |
| Condition | No heavy flaking rust, no bends or kinks |
If something is wrong
Note it on the delivery challan before signing, take photos, and call the dealer the same day. Problems raised at the gate are easy to fix. Problems raised after the steel is tied in the slab are not. If you are unsure, call us and we will walk you through it.
Frequently asked questions
- Which step do people skip most?
- Weighing a sample at delivery. It takes a few minutes and is the easiest way to catch underweight bars.
- Do I need the mill test certificate for a small house?
- It is worth asking for on any structural steel. It links the bars you receive to a tested lot.
- Can I store TMT bars in the open?
- For a short time, off the ground and covered. Long exposure to rain and soil causes heavy rust, so plan deliveries close to use.
- Should I pay before the weight check?
- Better to check the load first, or agree that payment follows a satisfactory check.
