What a brand really gives you
- A BIS licence for the steel bar standard, IS 1786, and the ISI mark on the product.
- Controlled raw material and rolling, so the chemistry and strength are consistent from one lot to the next.
- Rolled in brand name and grade on the bar, so you can trace what you bought.
- A mill test certificate for each lot, and a company that can be held responsible.
That is the quality, and the premium largely pays for the testing and the consistency. Our best TMT bar brand guide compares the major makers.
The BIS and ISI mark
Under the BIS scheme, a manufacturer needs a licence to put the Standard Mark on bars. The licence has a number, typically printed as CM/L followed by digits. It should appear on the bundle tag or the test certificate.
The mark is a start, not a guarantee. Fake tags exist, and a licence for one plant does not cover another plant. Always verify the licence.
How to verify a BIS licence
- Note the licence number from the tag or the MTC.
- Open the BIS Care app (free, from BIS) and use the option to verify a licence by number. The BIS website has a similar search.
- Check that the licence is valid, that the plant name and the product (IS 1786 bars) match what is on the tag.
- If you cannot find the licence, ask the dealer. Do not go ahead with the order on a number that does not verify.
Branded vs local at a glance
| Point | Branded | Local or unbranded |
|---|---|---|
| BIS licence | Yes, verifiable | Often none, or not verifiable |
| Rolled marks | Brand and grade rolled in | May be missing or copied |
| Test certificate | Per lot | Rarely |
| Weight accuracy | Usually within tolerance | Varies, check every lot |
| Price | Higher per kg | Lower per kg |
| Redress if it fails | Company support | Depends on the dealer |
When local is acceptable
For non-structural work such as a small boundary wall, a garden gate, or a temporary shed, bars from a local re-roller can be acceptable if they are weighed and checked. For slabs, beams, columns and foundations, the steel carries the load of a building, so the risk is not worth the saving.
Whatever you buy, check the weight at delivery and look at the bars. If your engineer has specified a grade, you must supply that grade.
Get approval in writing
If you want to use a local or alternate brand, ask your engineer for written approval, with the brand and grade. This protects you if something goes wrong, and it keeps the design intact. Some banks and housing finance companies also expect BIS-marked steel.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if my TMT is ISI marked?
- Look for the ISI mark and CM/L licence number on the bundle tag, and verify the licence in the BIS Care app.
- Is the extra price worth it for a house?
- For structural steel, usually yes, because consistency and traceability matter more than the saving.
- Can I mix brands in one slab?
- Avoid it. Use one brand and grade per structural element unless the engineer allows it.
- Does a BIS licence prove my bundle is good?
- No. It proves the plant is licensed. Still check marks, weight and the test certificate.
